Is your website hacked? Website with hidden iframe to .cn website

Ok,

I recently had a couple of my websites hacked, I am not sure if they were hacked or was it some malicious program installed on my computer. Here is what I found. Most of those websites had the following iframe code in index files

The website superbetfair.cn was often replaced by some other website. In almost all cases they were .cn website. e.g.

iframe src="http:// lotmachinesguide.cn/in.cgi?income56" width=1 height=1 style="visibility: hidden" iframe

My first instinct was to simply clean the files. Research on net showed that the infection was almost always in index.php file which made it relatively easier. After having spent four hours cleaning some of deep structured website and wordpress blogs I thought I am over with it. But NO!

Next day or within few hours the infection was back. A few things changed though
In some of the websites the infection was again same iframe code. However, in some other websites the infection was encoded and scrambled with javascripting. In some rare cases it has gone further ahead by scrambling the javascripting with ascii codes. Yes its those weird !56!66 numbers that you see after script tag in your html code.

My first thought analysis was:

My host is infected - but I had to disregard that possibility as the infection was on multiple sites across multiple hosts.
My password is hacked - again a tough nut for someone to crack unless I was being targeted.
My PC has been compromised - Well that kinda make sense, I had my antivirus disabled for last few days because it slows down my internet connection.

So I ran a scan of my PC but there was no infection detected. I knew I am up against something.

Luckily, my friend is a tech support for a renowned company. Gave him a call and he recommended me two softwares.

I ran the first scan with malwarebytes and bingo - It detected over 20 malware and a few registry hacks. Clicked a button and they were gone. Ran a full system scan with malwarebytes.

Next step was to use trojan remover from simplysup - ran a quick scan and it detected a few files and quarantined them. The next step was to run a full system scan. It took around 7 hours to do, detected nothing. Oh btw, both of these softwares came with free trial so I had not spent anything.

The next step was to run up my antivirus (Kaspersky) again and perform a full system scan, this time Kaspersky came up with five possible threats and quarantined them.

The next step was to uninstall my ftp program coreftp till that point. So I installed filezilla client.

Meanwhile I had setup one of my staff members to change all passwords and login information. So by the time I had this done, all the login and password were changed. (If you are suffering from this infection, I highly recommend that you change your passwords etc from some other computer and don't login using your old ftp program)

Once all this was done, I started logging into my websites with new information without storing them in the client and started cleaning the index.php file. Its a gruelsome task but after few hours almost all sites were disinfected. 18 hours have passed and as of now I have not seen it return so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

SPECIAL NOTE TO WORDPRESS USERS

If you are a wordpress blog owner and have this infection, you will have to clean the following files

Index.php in root folder
index.php in wp-content folder
index.php in wp-admin folder
index.php in all the themes (all folders in wp-content/theme folder )
default-filters.php in the wp-include folder (this is only in some installations)
Make sure you change your username and password for wordpress and ftp separately once you have cleaned your blog, also check for any plugin that has any file named index.

If your wordpress is infected then chances are you won't be able to login to your admin panel either.

SPECIAL NOTE TO DRUPAL USERS

If you are seeing a parsing error on opening your drupal based website, that might be because of this infection. Just log in to your ftp account and download the index.php file. Remove the malicious line of code and you should be good to go again.
Please note you will have to change all passwords.

So far all looks good.

Special Note:

I am posting this because a friend of mine called up and asked if I know about this, his website is apparently infected too. I might seem to go through a complex route to solve an easy problem but anyhow that is what worked for me. If you have an easier solution to this, let me know in comments. Also as usual I will suggest you to take backup wherever possible before going through these steps. I won't be liable for any damages, this is just a free advice :)

Fighting Spam With Spam

I dont think I need to mention Spam to you, but recently it grew out of portion for my main email address.. courtesy to some really high profile internet marketers who even allowed their web designers to use the list. Looked like a business relation turned personal affair where even your uncle's friend is your uncle. Weird people!

Anyhow, this is not about what I suffered but how to get rid of it.
1) Gmail has some interesting features that you can use to fight spam. E.g. if your email address is xyz@gmail.com, you can use x.yz@gmail to manage all email subscriptions. This way you won't be exposing your primary email address to them and you can easily cut of this email address anytime. The other option is to create another gmail account and use the forwarding option from there on.

2) The other option are services like
- temporaryinbox.com
- spamavert.com

Both of these services have their own firefox addon available. If you install the addon then with one right click you can generate an temporary email address that will last only for 6-12 hours. So if you got to download a report or get access to a webpage that requires your email address, this looks to be a really good option. You can generate this kind of email address with a right click, use it to get access or whatever report you want and forget about it. You won't be receiving any email ever after from that website. The good thing is you won't have to worry about your email address being sold further or receiving email from friends of friends either.

While I have tried temporaryinbox.com at first go and found it great, I don't know if there is some problem with their server as it often fails to generate email address. I think its because of server load. Spamavert has some good feature like it immediately opens up the concerned email inbox also, so you don't have to login anywhere.

Busy With IndianPetDogs.com

My aff marketing and internet marketing work has been keeping me pretty busy for quite some time now but at same time there are a hell lot of other things that I have been trying to do. One of them is launch of IndianPetDogs.com - a site dedicated to dog breeders and kennel owners in India. I have been feeling that there was plenty of space for such a site in Indian scenario.

The dog market is booming, almost as good as it would be in any other part of world. However people are still trading offline, most of them don't even have their own website to showcase their dog. So I thought why not, lets take a shot at it. Till now most of the publicity is word of mouth publicity. Most dog owners that we have talked to have been very enthusiastic about the website and feel there is a lot to come in this area.

Dog owners, kennel owners can place their own classified ads, create their profiles, create forums and communities. We plan to rope in a lot of dog shows sponsorship as the site gains momentum.

There is a lot to be done in this area and I hope this site for dogs in India hits the #1 spot.

XoftSpy Spyware Adware Review: My Expert Opinion (IMHO)

Being into software and web development has its own advantages and disadvantages. Like its easier to hook up with girls since they often mess their PC and don't know how to get out, which means you get free invites to their place :). At same time, you often have to download things that might be potentially dangerous and often harm your computer.

Last time I was hit, it took me a few days to get out of it. It was not a virus, but rather an innoccous adware, well that is what it looked like. Started with just giving me a pop-up window if I used Internet explorer. Remember that I user Opera so Internet Explorer is not a big deal for me. But it soon spread like a virus, and before I could realize my system was taken over. I was no longer the administrator and all the system process users were showing blank names.

If you don't understand what I am talking about but can feel that you are going through it then I recommend XoftSpy.

Anyhow, I won't go into technical details here. Rather I will present the Xoftspy review and what it can do for you. Find and remove infected files immediately whether they reside in running processes, files, folders, or registry entries. It scans almost everything.

One of the things I liked the most is XoftSpy has one of the largest spyware databases of any spyware removal tool and includes automatic feature updates for protection against new spyware and adware. Once Xoft Spy find the infection, it labels it for you and indicates its threat level. Delete all the threats, or only specific ones.

The software was able to clearly get rid of all the issues. Few noticeable things were

1) The system was noticeably faster

2) There was no adware or spyware problem thereafter.

3) It was available for immediate download which was a big plus.

4) There were no side effects. Yes, there are adware and spyware that manipulate your system to their advantage.

The only drawback. Not too many options for the user. There is a scheduler available though but I am sure advanced user like me (IMHO), will definitely prefer more options like selecting the files to remove.

If I am asked to rate it on a scale 1 to 10. I will give XoftSpy a rating of 9/10.

Minimizing Firefox To System Tray

Let me reiterate - OPERA IS THE BEST BROWSER YOU CAN FIND!

but when you are into web development you have to resort to firefox often for the add-on. Funny though that since addon have started appearing I have stopped seeing progress in firefox, its memory heavy, cpu heavy, slowest browser that is now just for Google promotion - The very reason for its existence.

Anyhow I am quite used to opera where pressing ctrl+H send it to system tray, freeing the task bar space. So I thought may be someone at firefox is trying to copy that too. But no, finally had to get an add-on (an unsigned addon that carries as much security risk as anything else) to minimize firefox to the system tray.

To customize this add-on, go to Tools menu of Firefox and the n click Add-ons.

Now select Minimize to Tray Add-on and click options.

This will open the options window. Check the options you like.

Click ok and you are done.

Works could have been inbuilt in firefox!

Till the time firefox itself becomes anything worth competing with Opera or Even Flock you'll have to rely on addons.

Internet Explorer 7 Now Available To Software Pirates

Microsoft has released an update for Internet Explorer 7, dropping the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation for XP users. Previously only genuine copies of XP (i.e. those that phone home to validate) could download and install IE 7.

Microsoft’s move to open up IE 7 to pirated copies of Windows may stem from the fact that IE 7 has yet to overtake IE 6 in popularity according to most web traffic surveys. The removal of the WGA requirement is almost guaranteed to increase the install numbers over IE6.

Microsoft has also made a few small changes to IE 7 in today's update, including the default visibility of the menu bar and a new, more in-depth tour for first-time users.

Back After A Long Time - With Drupal, SEO, Affiliate Marketing & Myself

Ok Everybody!

Long time I have been away. Busy playing with internet marketing ;)

Yeh, well my experiments on living with adsense are a miserable failure. $8, netted so far in four months. Phew! $2 a month.

Anyhow, things are not that bad, because there are much better things out there. By, the way hard to believe that this blog is now a PR3 blog!. I plan to have another post out there just for it. It is hard for me to still accept, cos I had done nothing for it. Anyhow moving away from it. I am starting a new clickbank earning blog. Yes! that is what I am into, I don't think its really getting any big as of now, but yeh the results will be interesting.

Btw, i will just make a few statements here and then keep on posting on them over time.

Hindu milk miracle

The Hindu milk miracle was a phenomenon reported to have occurred on September 21, 1995. Before dawn, a Hindu worshipper at a temple in south New Delhi made an offering of milk to a statue of Lord Ganesha. When a spoonful of milk from the bowl was held up to the trunk of the statue, the liquid was seen to disappear, apparently taken in by the idol. Word of the event spread quickly, and by mid-morning it was found that statues of the entire Hindu pantheon in temples all over North India were taking in milk, with the family of Shiva (Parvati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya) apparently the "thirstiest". By noon the news had spread beyond India, and Hindu temples in Britain, Canada, Dubai, and Nepal among other countries had successfully replicated the phenomenon, and the World Hindu Council (an Indian Hindu organisation) had announced that a miracle was occurring.

The apparent miracle had a significant effect on the areas around major temples; vehicle and pedestrian traffic in New Delhi was dense enough to create a gridlock lasting until late in the evening. Many stores in areas with significant Hindu communities saw a massive jump in sales of milk, with one Gateway store in England selling over 25,000 pints of milk, and overall milk sales in New Delhi jumped over 30%. Many minor temples struggled to deal with the vast increase in numbers, and queues spilled out into the streets.

It should be possible to replace this non-free image with a freely licensed one. If you can, please do so as soon as is practical.

Seeking to explain the phenomenon, scientists from India's Ministry of Science and Technology travelled to a temple in New Delhi and made an offering of milk containing a food colouring. As the level of liquid in the spoon dropped, it became obvious that after the milk disappeared from the spoon, it coated the statue beneath where the spoon was placed. With this result, the scientists offered capillary action as an explanation; the surface tension of the milk was pulling the liquid up and out of the spoon, before gravity caused it to run down the front of the statue. This explanation did nothing to reduce the numbers of faithful rushing to the temples, however, and queues of people carrying pots, pans, and buckets of milk continued to gather.

Moreover, the "capillary action" explanation resulted in further doubts. Although rocks, stones and other solids are indeed capable of capillary action, their density usually is such that any capillary action performed is extremely gradual and slow. Most solids, such as those likely to be used for carvings and sculptures, are of such an extreme density that they are rendered virtually impermeable. Yet the rate of liquid absorption evidenced in the videos indicate a high rate of intake that is almost impossible for most such solid objects to achieve. The capillary action shown is more akin to the rapid absorption rates obtained by sponges and other highly porous materials.

Additionally, many of the fed idols were painted over completely. Sometimes in several different layers due to the many colors applied. Paint forms a water-resistant coating that greatly negates the absorption capabilities of porous materials like plaster and wood, some of the most common materials used to manufacture the drinking' idols . Painted rock & stone (even pumice) would have almost no capillary action capabilities left to it. Another explanation of this phenomenon attributed the "drinking" to dribble. That is to say, it was suspected the feeders were simply dribbling the liquid down from the spoons as they served it. But the amount of overflow shown in the videos trickling down in such a manner, particularly in comparison to the massive amounts of milk being offered, is negligible indeed. Even the devotees who seem to be ‘force-feeding’ the idols get much more ‘in’ than what is spilled over. Therefore, the capillary action and overflow theories presented in order to debunk the phenomenon have actually resulted scientifically unsatisfactory and incomplete to this date.

To those who believed in the miracle, further proof was offered when the phenomenon seemed to cease before the end of the day, with many statues refusing to take more milk even before noon. A small number of temples outside of India reported the effect continuing for several more days, but no further reports were made after the beginning of October. However, skeptics hold the incident to be an example of mass hysteria, and when reports of the Monkey-man of New Delhi began to appear in 2001, many newspapers harked back to the event. The story was picked up, mostly as a novelty piece, by news services around the world, including CNN, the BBC, the New York Times and the Guardian.

A new beginning: Flock

I had always been a great fan of Opera, and I think among all the existing browsers it is the best. Firefox is good but it is more of hype and any user of Opera will certify to what I say. Opera leads. But anyhow this post is not about Opera or Firefox, this is about a new web browser that I got to test today:

Flock

Truly, Flock seems to be the next generation web browser that is truly loaded with all the features that are becoming a part of everyday life. Think of it this way, that I am not writing this blog in the normal Opera window, rather I am writing this blog in a separate window especially designed for blogger. All I need to do is to log into my blogger account once and allow flock to store my login information & I am ready. What more, no need to wait for the server to respond (that can be frustrating if you are working on a slower connection), you have a preview button right on this window, just click it and it is ready. All the options for formatting are available directly out here so that I don't have to run around or think what to do. For someone like me who has used softwares for entire life, working on browsers even for tasks like posting a blog at times becomes slightly uncomfortable. Flock seems to take away that feeling with this interface.

I have something urgent to take my attention so I will publish it as it is and continue back with it tomorrow, till that time surely I would have experimented with this as much as I want. Till then I will tag this as

Now most people never realize this, that the adsense income is generated not just by the highest paying keywords but by a combination of high click rate and high paying keywords. Understand this, I may create a blog on Financial Markets targeting Student loans that provide very high value adsense ads but what is the use if the number of clicks are negligible or if I am finding it really hard to drive the traffic on those pages. Its bound to happen since most people are already targetting them. So, what do I do?
So, target those ads that not only provide with a decent enough payout but also have a larger click rate. Frankly speaking this is hard to tackle, its easier to find ads that will generate higher payout but difficult to find keywords with more click through. You should probably have an adwords account to find out what would be the impressions and daily average cost to you to get an idea of this, but this is something that really helps. More the impressions and your probable spending, the higher the chances that those keywords have a better click through. For those of you who are confused about what I am trying to say, here is a example ( the figures are all imaginary)

Keyword#1: Online Casino Bonus
EPC: $0.5
Expected Clicks Per Month: 200

Keyword#2: Student Loan
EPC: $2.5
Expected Clicks Per Month: 20

So which keyword earns you more, clearly its keyword#1, it should bring you decent enough $100 a month.
The idea is simple its all PPC, you get paid only when there are clicks, just having high values ads lying around is a waste. So target those ads that people click that have more impressions.

Money Rich Market does not implies only high value ads but rather those ads that people are looking for and excite people to click.

Markus Frind started plentyoffish.com from home. He gets over 500 million pageviews per month and around $10,000 per day in earning from adsense.

2) Kevin Rose

He is the founder of Digg.com, Digg was started with an initial investment of around a thousand dollars. Today it caters to around 400,000 members along with 200 million page views per month. Reported earning is around $3 million from adsense and some other advertising medias.

3) Jeremy Shoemaker

Well this is what should be perfectly acceptable and done. Thousands of domains and thousands of websites all bringing in a little money every day that adds up to a huge total at the end. Reported earning is of around $140,000 per month.

4) Jason Calacanis

How to add javascript to Drupal Nodes

Another problem with Drupal Nodes.

This time I was trying to configure a basic node with some javascript to show rotating links. I designed the entire page in macromedia (I usually do that and then copy the code back on drupal node) and checked everything and then pasted the code back on drupal node. But then this problem came up, how should i move the javascript code that I have defined in the head section of my html page into the drupal node. As such I cannot modify the head section of individual drupal nodes.

The solution:
This is how I added the javascript code to this drupal node.
I moved my entire javascript code into a .js file, i.e. the content between script tags. I then copied this .js file onto a definite location on my server. Now I could simply call this js file from the drupal node page without writing the entire script again and utilize it the way I want. Finally i had what I needed, a rotating image gallery using javascript on a drupal page :).

I have removed it as of now so can't put it on display but will show you another javascript example as soon as i get it ready.

MetaTags For Drupal Nodes

Well, this post is about how to add metatags to individual posts/nodes of your drupal installation. For completely newbies, metatags are keywords on basis of which search engines determine the primary content of your pages. Well, that was a very basic idea. The idea is to add metatags to invidual pages/nodes just like you would do in a simple html/php page. Moving ahead, just like everything in Drupal (Drupal is really really extensive), there is a module for adding metatags too. So you need to do is to go to drupal site get the module for metatags and configure it for enabled status in your modules administration page.
The important thing to note out here is that in the module is named nodewords and not metatags or anything like that.

Problem with enabling clean url in drupal.

I was trying to enable clean url on my new build muscles faster site and ran into the following problem.

The requested URL /admin/settings/clean-urls was not found on this server.

I tried to enable permissions in the settings and also some other hacks but nothing worked. I had another drupal installation on same server with clean urls working so this file not found error was definitely not related to my server. After searching over internet, i finally surmised that the problem is definitely related to the .htaccess file. However I was not able to correct the .htaccess file settings myself. Finally after a lot of searching and struggling I got hold of .htaccess file that may solve this problem from one of the drupal nodes.

I am posting the contents of .htaccess file below. All you need to do is to open a notepad, paste the content of this file below and save it as .htaccess file and upload it.

A new problem this time -" How to paste html codes in blogger post "?

It seems that blogger is not that good when it comes to people who are discussing codes or anything. I was providing the solution on how to put up tables in blogger post and needed to put in the html code and the blogger will not show the html codes, rather it rendered them and created a mess altogether. Anyhow here is a workaround that might work for people who are working with web designing and need to paste some codes into their blogger post that users can read and are not rendered by blogger.

Suppose you want to paste a code like

So how do I managed to show you the code above. Slightly tricky.

What you need to do is to open a WSISWYG editor like frontpage or visual studio web express edition and paste the code in design view . Make sure you are pasting it in the design view. (Note: In studio express edition, you need to 'paste alternate' to get this code pasted in design view). Now if you go and check the code you will find the following changes made

> changes to &??
< changes to &??

Well its ok, that is what you need to copy and paste back into your blogger post. This will not be rendered by blogger and it will show up as proper html code in the blogger post. Your readers will be properly able to read this html code from the post.

How to remove ?q= mark from the url's of the drupal site.

I installed drupal on my second site - How to build muscles better and faster" and ran into problem with clean urls. All the posts were showing with ?q= mark.

To remove this ?q= symbol from your url's you need to enable clean_url at the following link
http://www.your-site.com/admin/settings.

Click on Clean URLs link. This will take you to a page that gives you option to enable or disable clean url link.
There will also be a link for checking if clean url can be used on your site or not, click on that and check out. ( I ran into problem with enabling clean url as it always showed file not found, i have posted the solution to that on my next post). You can then enable the clean url and you will find that the url now are shown without ?q= symbol in your website. I think it is fairly easy to do once you know the right stuff.

Drupal 5.X: How to add images in posts.

I had been boggled again by drupal. I was writing some posts and had to put some pictures along (just like any other html page). I thought that drupal must have this already setup but No!. You cannot put an image in the html code and expect it to be shown. There are a lot of modules to add images in drupal like
CCK
ImageCache
ImageField
Image

However all of them are for more advanced functions like, if you want to show a random image gallery, or using same image on multiple posts, or a completely image based post. Too tough I must say.
Well here is one of the simplest hack to show images in drupal posts/story/pages. It is so simple that some of you may find it obvious.
I design my post in dreamweaver, and when the image address is specified, i use the absolute address of the image as it is stored on my web hosting. E.g. I have images placed in images folder on my site. So the only thing I needed to do was to link the image in my post with the address to this image folder on my site. Here is the page as you can see on Building Great biceps.

Well, that is it. A simple way to show images in content pages/nodes of drupal.

Now Typo 3 Installation Problem: failed to open stream: Permission denied

I have also taken up to experiment typo3 CMS on my new site How to build muscles faster. The moment i installed it it ran into problems, I dont think that with that kind of installation and with no proper installation guide this CMS is for amateur users for technically faint hearted. The problem was the errors it gave.

Warning: fopen(/wwwroot/typo3conf/localconf.php):
failed to open stream: Permission denied in wwwroot/t3lib/class.t3lib_div.php on line 1230

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /wwwroot/t3lib/class.t3lib_div.php:1230) in wwwroot/t3lib/class.t3lib_install.php on line 1786

( the error file names or directory may be slightly different in your casE)

It boggled me initially but finally got thru it.
The solution to this installation problem in typo3 is
1) change the permission on /t3lib/class.t3lib_div.php to 777
2) change the permission on /t3lib/class.t3lib_install.php to 777
3) change the permission on /typo3 (directory) to 777
4) change the permission on /t3lib (directory) to 777
4) change the permission on /typo3conf(directory) to 777

Well that seems to have fixed the problem. I am still trying to understand which of these files/directory is the one that was causing problem. But this typo3 installation problem is resolved as of now.

Problems with table formatting in blogger or blogspot

I was making this post on drupal vs joomla and I need to paste a table into the blogger post. I thought it would be the simplest thing till the time i tried creating the table in the blogger post. There were two problems

1) There was a large space in between the table and the post - Blogger automatically adds line breaks.
2) The formatting and everything was lost.

Finally i found a solution from one of the other persons who had suffered from this table formatting problem in blogger.

This approach has been tested on Opera, Firefox and IE 6.

At the top of post add the following line:

Then place the table within that class:

This turns the line breaks off within this div and the table is shown properly.

Drupal: Expanded & Sliding Menus: Nice Menu Problem with IE6

Nice Menu Module: Problem with IE6

I installed nice menu module today and everything looked great. The menu sliding function seems to work perfectly though for a moment I felt reverting back to the original non sliding menu format as it should give more page views (because of more visible topics - just a guess) as compared to this.
Anyhow everything was good as long as I had not tested it on IE6. The problem on IE6 with nice menu is that it does not expands below level 1. Whenever I hovered my mouse on the parent menu, it will slide and expand it to level 1, but if I moved my mouse of sub menu at level 1 (again a parent menu), it will not expand it into level 2. I looked for support on the drupal site and the nice menu project to see how to fix this problem that is happening only with IE6.

After a lot of struggle I did not find anything really effective on the drupal site or other weblogs in regard to this problem. However I got mention of a site where this problem was fixed and everything was working. So I got hold of the css file used and I am posting the same CSS file here for your use. It should work and solve your problem too. I have modified it as per my need. This nicemenu.css works perfectly with firefox but has some spacing problem with opera and IE6. However it should at least get your menu expanded to its full without any problems. This is the best alternative I have been able to find as of now. You can use this CSS or modify it as per you need

To use this fix, I am posting the content of the entire css file right below. You can paste this in a css file, name it as nicemenu.css and upload it. It should fix your problem with nice menu in IE6 and it will show the menu levels beyond level 1.

Template / Themes	Joomla really has a great deal of offering in terms of themes and templates that can be applied to various pages.	Not many choices available. The default choise are not really good. Earlier versions allow only one template for all pages though that will change with Drupal 5.X.
User Permissions	Joomla has a very centralized admin area. Few people can be passed on permissions beyond adding posts or adding content.	Drupal has a much better system, though its group based management and not a single user based management.
Multisites Management	Available only commercially.	Perhaps one of the most desirable features of drupal.
Content Management	Joomla is very restrictive in choices it offers..	Unlimited taxonomy, vocabulary, categories and subcategories. Drupal is way ahead.
Documentation	Previous versions had poor documentation, Joomla 1.5 seems to improve on that. However, a lot of useful information on the Joomla forums.	Not too bad.
Commercial Community	Excellent, one of the strongest in Open Source SMS.Try Joomla Yellow Pages or Joomla.org.	Weak. Try Drupal.org, Drupal Yellow Pages or Drupalancers.
External Integration	Joomla 1.5 is supposed to have better API and more hooks for external integration.	Drupal is the choice if you are looking for external integration, It has option for plenty of hooks.
Standards Compliance	Not great. Accessible Joomla is a fork necessary to move Joomla towards compliance. Mambo/Joomla dates from before standards were even considered (1999).	Excellent support
General Community	Great. Both commercial and open source support available.	Great, try Drupal.org, its really helpful.
Ease-of-use	Joomla is really easy to start with, even for non-technical amateur users.	Drupal takes some time before you start understanding on how to do things.

Drupal: Expanded & Sliding Menus

I had been looking for implementing expandable sliding menu for my Drupal 5.X installation on my acne site for quite some time. The solution finally arrived in form of a readymade module -"nice menu". I had read about this module at start also but was not able to locate it for 5.X installation. Well! got it now and implemented it and it solved the complete problem at one go. Anyone who is looking for drupal sliding expandable menus can download this module from this link

The released version for 5.X is still in development stage and i believe there are some issues still to be resolved. However it may work great for a novice like me and if you are a pro you may be able to make it better yourself.

I am outlining just basic steps that i followed to get it running.
1) Configure your menu. Decide which menus have child and which one do you want to be expanded. (Remember that in this module you do not have option for always expanded menu and even if you configured it that way, it will not make any change.)
2) Download this module and upload it.
3) Go to modules mode in administrative task of your drupal installation and configure this module for use.
4) Go to blocks mode in administrative task and configure this "nice menu" block, for showing in left sidebar. You cannot make it display in right sidebar without further work because the menu slides left to right.
5) you can remove your navigation block from the sidebar else you will see both the navigation block as well as sliding menu block simultaneously.
6) Check out and this should be working!

Simple as that!

I will be posting on it more as i experiment more with these sliding expanded menus.

I had been researching google trends recently and tried on Joomla vs Drupal.

One thing that really surprised me was the continous rise of popularity of Joomla while Drupal just maintained its place. However as can be seen the overall popularity of both the CMS systems is on rise.

For new comers who would be wondering why Joomla's graph starts after 2005 only, its because in 2005, the bulk of Mambo's developers left mambo and developed Joomla.
The popularity of Joomla can be attributed to its balance between key features like

1) functionality
2) flexibility
3) performance
4) quality of code
5) ease of use
6) documentation
7) user interface design
8) support and product marketing.

Having said that I think Joomla is a strong competitor to Drupal in terms of popularity.

I started adding categorization and vocabularies to my site today. Looks like a feature quite similar to lables offered below by blogger.com.
The Drupal Taxonomy module i.e. categories is definitely one of the features that most of the people look for and is definitely a step ahead of Joomla. It allows any webmaster to organize his content with a great flexibility and in a knowledge sharing manner.

I will just show how web content can be organized using this Drupal Categories module.

I have done it using Drupal 5.X with admin permissions.

I will use my acne site for reference. I needed to categorize topics into various heads like Acne, Causes of Acne, Acne Treatment, Acne Products, Acne Solutions ( a whole lot of acne related terms).
Lets pick up only three of these - Acne, Causes of Acne, Acne Treatment.

First thing is to plan your content structure e.g. right above, i have planned out my content structure, where each content from my site will go to either of these three tags only.

Now you need to create a vocabulary for the text.
To do this follow the following steps:
click administer > categories > click the 'add vocabulary' tab

In this screen type "Acne Topic" as vocabulary name.

Now you need to set the binding of vocabulary to content type. If you want to do this for pages e.g. I have set my vocabulary to be used with the content of type pages then check the Pages content type. Next, click the checkbox called Multiple select. This allows you to select multiple vocabulary for same content.
We will not experiment with other options right now.

The next step is to add terms to your vocabulary, by terms i mean the tags/labels that we defined above.
To do this.
click administer > categories > click the 'add terms' tab

Give a name to this term e.g. "Acne Treatment"
now give a description to this term, this descriptions shows up in the hover text of the link or tag and can be a useful feature.

You can review your vocabulary by clicking list terms on to the right of your Topic.
You will see something like this:

Acne Topic
-Acne
-Causes of Acne
-Acne Treatment

This is the basic idea on how to define the content structure.

Test it out by creating a page.

On the administer menu:
click create content > Page.
Now you will see a newly created "Acne Topic" tag near the top of form.
Type the Title,
choose Acne treatment as the acne topic (you can also choose multiple tags) then write some text in the Body field and click submit.

Your newly uploaded page will be tagged "Acne treatment"
click on the tag to see all the articles with the same tag.

Its a very useful content organization technique that not only helps the administrators but even the visitors looking for information on related text.

Outlining reasons why I chose Drupal for SEO

1) You can rename any of your page so that is shows as a page instead of a link to a node. This is a very important part if you want you page to be ranked higher in google.

2)Although you can rename your page to your choice, it also has a suggest name module, that names your page according to the content, a nice idea as you get a name that might be more appropriate in terms of what web spiders are looking for.

I installed Google analytics on my website: Complete acne treatment.

I had a great deal of tough time trying to modify theme.inc to get this module working on Drupal. A suggested method of using Google analytics is by modifying theme.inc file in following manner.
insert this line
$output = '[Google analytics code]'
right before the line containing

$output = '/body>'
However this did not work for me on Drupal 5.X, i might be making some mistake but the code never seem to reach the above line.

Anyhow I finally found a much easier method of installing Google Analytics on Drupal 5.x
I just created a block on my site using the following steps
goto Block->Add Block
Add your [Google analytic code] to this new block.
Set the input format settings to "full html", don't use filtered html.
Place this block in footer.

That is pretty much what you will need to get it working.

Drupal: Problem with expanded menus.

I was facing some problem with expanded menus on my acne site, i will first descibe the problem below and then the solution.

The problem was that if I created menus with Multiple Items/Sub menus with "Expanded option" checked in menu settings then the menu will always show up in a expanded stage. So I had five menus with items all of them used to show up in a expanded state which was really a mess considering the user friendliness and the time it takes to load. If the expanded option was checked off, then the menus will not expand even if clicked or on the target page. I had this problem when I had applied the module for Global Redirect (which is otherwise a really good module for the purpose of SEO).

The solution:

The problem it turned out was that I had been giving full url in the url path of my menu, which means that if my menu was Acne Treatment, then the path I was giving was
http://www.complete-acne-treatment.com/main_acne_treatment

This seemed to have mess up the Drupal Interface.

The correct way to apply such menus with global redirect is to give the url path only as:
main_acne_treatment
and not as
http://www.complete-acne-treatment.com/main_acne_treatment.

This should correct the problem in regard to expanded menus and with global redirect.

Let me know if it helps anybody or if you are still having problem.

Drupal 5.X: Still lacking community support?

I have installed drupal 5.x on one of my site - Acne Treatment as i did discussed in other posts, but it seems that Drupal 5.X lacks the kind of community support that was for previous version. I have been struggling to find a small module for sliding menu's completely expanded menu's are not the thing that I will like on my site. All the versions for sliding menu's still seem to be for previous versions. In fact could find few things that have been updated for 5.X till the time of writing this post. I think there needs to be a more detailed tutorial on how to modify templates or may be I am missing the correct link to such tutorial.

Other thing that I find a little problematic with Drupal is that there seems to be complete absence of support for modules of earlier version, this problem I think does not exists with Joomla (on basis of what I have read).

I installed my first ever CMS yesterday - DRUPAL, after uploading it took me 10 minutes to configure and get it running. I don't understand how can anyone find it hard to install Drupal and if still a Joomla installation is easier then Drupal then Joomla must be god. Anyhow after installing Drupal I have spent quite a few hours testing it out on my test site for acne Complete acne treatment, I have been able to get it running in a good shape. I am still not into modifying themese for Drupal, though there is an obvious lack of variety in Drupal themes but I hope it performs as it is publicised.

I have been trying to study which of the two CMS - joomla or drupal may be a better option for start. After reading a lot of articles from various sites and opinion of different users, this is my initial inference.

Joomla is a the way to go if you are setting up your first site and you are not sure about the things. However for a seasoned professional Drupal seems to be the better choice.

Drupal is younger of two as such they have built upon some of the weakness of Joomla, like Drupal offers extensive content management system (CMS)that joomla does not offers.

Drupal is more faster if you have catching enabled on your webserver and expect a lot of traffic.

Drupal seems to offer a more efficient and cleaner code as compared to Joomla.

Drupal seems to enjoy a greater community support as compared to Joomla.

Drupal has a relatively easier API as compared to Joomla.

Drupal offers unlimited article nesting using the taxonomy, or by using the excellent Category module.

However I believe most of this features are more important for professional or say big websites.

For amateur and hobbyists. Joomla has to offer the following

Very easy to setup out of box solution

A large number of available themes to customize your website.

Many drupal modules are broken in 5.0.

Drupal CSS is divided into 17 files (although you can club them), which makes it a real pain to customize it.

Drupal 5.X: Error in parsing theme.inc.

A new problem this time.
Syntax Error in parsing theme.inc, unexpected T_return at line....

I just made a small modification to my theme.inc file and this error popped up. As usual I searched around over internet for solution but this time I could not find any solution that can solve this error. Finally I found a solution that though may not be helpful to all but can be your final rescue attempt. Download a fresh installation, find the theme.inc file and upload this theme.inc file to your web folder at the same place.

The error with theme.inc went away and muscle building site is now up and running again.

Choosing a Free Web Host Advertising

Most free web hosts impose advertising on your website. This is done to cover the costs of providing your site the free web space and associated services. Some hosts require you to place a banner on your pages, others display a window that pops up everytime a page on your site loads, while still others impose an advertising frame on your site. There is really no hard and fast rule which is to be preferred: some people hate a pop-up window, other webmasters dislike having to stuff banner codes onto their pages, and many people cannot stand an advertising frame (which may cause problems when you submit your website to search engines). Whichever method is used, check that you're comfortable with the method.
Amount of web space

Does it have enough space for your needs? If you envisage that you will expand your site eventually, you might want to cater for future expansion. Most sites use less than 5MB of web space. Indeed, at one time, one of my other web sites, thefreecountry.com, used less than 5MB of space although it had about 150 pages on the site. Your needs will vary, depending on how many pictures your pages use, whether you need sound files, video clips, etc.
FTP access

Some free hosting providers only allow you to design your page with their online builder. While this is useful for beginners, do you have the option to expand later when you become experienced and their online page builder does not have the facility you need? FTP access, or at the very least, the ability to upload your pages by email or browser, is needed. Personally, I feel FTP access is mandatory, except for the most trivial site.
File type and size limitations

Watch out for these. Some free hosts impose a maximum size on each of the files you upload (including one with a low of 200KB). Other sites restrict the file types you can upload to HTML and GIF/JPG files. If your needs are different, eg, if you want to distribute your own programs on your pages, you will have to look elsewhere.
Reliability and speed of access

This is extremely important. A site that is frequently down will lose a lot of visitors. If someone finds your site on the search engine, and he tries to access it but find that it is down, he'll simply go down the list to find another site. Slow access is also very frustrating for visitors (and for you too, when you upload your site). How do you know if a host is reliable or fast? If you can't get feedback from anyone, one way is to try it out yourself over a period of time, both during peak as well as non-peak hours. After all, it is free, so you can always experiment with it.
CGI-BIN access / PHP

This is not particularly crucial nowadays for a free web host, since there are so many free CGI hosting services available that provide counters, search engines, forms, polls, mailing lists, etc, without requiring you to dabble with Perl or PHP scripts.

However if you really want to do it yourself, with the minimum of advertising banners from these free providers, you will need either PHP or CGI-BIN access. Note that it is not enough to know they provide PHP or CGI-BIN access: you need to know the kind of environment your scripts run under: is it so restrictive that they are of no earthly use? For PHP scripts, does your web host allow you to use the mail() function? For Perl CGI scripts, do you have access to sendmail or its workalike?
Bandwidth allotment

Nowadays, many free web hosts impose a limit on the amount of traffic your website can use per day and per month. This means that if the pages (and graphic images) on your site is loaded by visitors beyond a certain number of times per day (or per month), the web host will disable your web site (or perhaps send you a bill). It is difficult to recommend a specific minimum amount of bandwidth, since it depends on how you design your site, your target audience, and the number of visitors you're able to attract to your site. In general, 100MB traffic per month is too little for anything other than your personal home page and 1-3GB traffic per month is usually adequate for a simple site just starting out. Your mileage, however, will vary.

I think I will have to take back my initial observation or analysis on Powerful templating in Drupal as compared to Joomla. As posted in one of the comments by Amy Stephen, Joomla has a much more bigger variety of templates than Drupal. Drupal 5.X is lacking on the themes and there is not much of variety to choose from. Do you create websites with regard to user or search engines?

Do you nave pages that are keyword rich and hyphenated to make sense to search engines.

Do you write articles that will push you up on search egnines.

Do you choose your keywords based on sources like word tracker and keyworddiscovery?

If yes, then you are too much focussed on search engines and not on visitors. However its finally your visitors that are gonna decide if your website is worth a repeat visit or not. Does it contains any useful information or not and wether it is worth a digg or tag.

if you fulfill the very basic needs of user then through a lot of non technical factors your website is still going to get popular so try to get "Visitor friendly and not just search engine friendly"

I am mesmerised by google adsense, not that I am earning something really big or good, still under $0.5 mark for this blog, but that feeling of earning passively is too good to resist and makes me take out time of my otherwise busy shedule. I had been researching a lot on forums and i even have been long time into affilate sites and doing good. Anyhow without deviating from the topic anymore, i was just wondering which keywords are the best ones to target, after all my blog was all about web technologies and search, though I feel a component of money making creeping in now. So I researched over the internet again and this time managed to find a good list of keywords that are supposedly the highest paying keywords. Remember that this list is very volatile, the moment too many people start using these keywords, the rates will start falling down, so you can't expect to make a lot actually but still you may be lucky enough.

Some notes
1) Don't use duplicated content or even PLR content.
2) Write articles that make sense to your user and don't just write them for the search engines or high paying ads.
3) If your articles are not oriented for the reader, they won't be clicking on ads. E.g. i might right a post about "student loan consolidation" or "school consolidation" but given the fact that very few people reading this post may be interested in that, the chances of my getting a click are rare.
4) https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool - This is the best tool for finding keywords both high paying as well as of your importance. Use it wisely and you will be rich.
